Lawyers for Human Rights invites applications from law graduates with an interest in human rights law and public interest litigation to join our Candidate Attorney Programme.

LHR offers candidate attorneys comprehensive in-house training and financial support to complete School of Legal Practice training. The position is based in LHR’s Pretoria office, and the placement will focus primarily on the work of the Refugee and Migrant Rights Programme, in the first instance.

The ideal candidate will have the following competencies and attributes:

  • Completed LLB degree
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Ambition to excel and ability to take initiative
  • Good communication and organisational abilities
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in social justice and human rights issues

[APPLICATIONS CLOSED] HUMAN RESOURCE ADMINISTRATOR – Pretoria

Lawyers for Human Rights invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to join our team as Human Resources Administrator in the National LHR Office, based in Pretoria.

LHR is part of the movement for social justice and undertakes strategic litigation and advocacy, as well as operates walk-in law clinics in three provinces, in order to provide high quality, inclusive legal services to marginalised communities and individuals who cannot afford private representation.  LHR works closely with its strong networks of key stakeholders including Chapter Nine institutions, local and provincial government, and community-based organisations.

The Human Resources Administrator will focus on general HR administration and coordination of the day-to-day operations of the LHR office. Duties will include:

  • Administration and co-ordination of the recruitment process in line with LHR policies
  • Preparation of relevant documents and submission to payroll/finance in a timely manner
  • Management of employee files and confidential information including ensuring that all staff are issued with a letter of appointment signed by the Executive Director.
  • Assisting the National Director in reviewing and developing relevant organisational HR policies and procedures
  • Develop the system necessary to recruit potential candidates
  • Providing support to managers in relation to employee performance and conduct absence management
  • Assisting with preparations for disciplinary and grievance hearings as necessary
  • Providing administrative support as required, including keeping records of LHR inventory that include, all electronic equipment, office furniture, and vehicles, and assisting in giving recommendation and organising quotations for newly purchased assets
  • Assisting the Operations Manager with fleet management and asset insurance
  • Assisting the Operations Manager in preparing tenant contracts for LHR’s building, the Kutlwanong Democracy Centre, and ensuring that contracts are renewed on an annual basis.
  • Respond to and resolve staff queries with regard to salaries, pensions, etc
  • Assist staff with issues of conflict, stress management, debriefing or any matters raised by staff that affect them on a day to day basis
  • Promote a positive work climate amongst staff through open and honest communication and fair and consistent treatment

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Diploma in Human Resource Management (NQF Level 6)
  • 2 – 3 years’ experience within Human Resources
  • Solid understanding of employment and labour legislation, as well as best HR practices
  • Experience in asset management and general administration
  • Experience in contract management and insurance processes
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office packages
  • Excellent organisational skills with an ability to prioritise

The ideal candidate will have the following additional attributes and competencies:

  • Ability to provide effective and efficient HR services aligned to LHR goals and in support of LHR’s values of inclusivity and non-discrimination
  • A demonstrated interest or experience in human rights work, and commitment to supporting human rights practitioners is highly desirable
  • Strong English writing and verbal communication skills
  • Strong communication skills in other South African / regional languages are a plus

Lawyers for Human Rights invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to join our team as a Paralegal Caseworker in our Musina Law Clinic, which provides free legal services to indigent asylum seekers and refugees.

The successful candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

  • A tertiary qualification in law, paralegal, or other relevant field
  • Good communication and writing skills
  • Experience working in communities and within diaspora networks towards social cohesion
  • A valid driver’s license will be an advantage

The ideal candidate will have the following additional attributes and competencies:

  • Drive, initiative, and the ability to meet deadlines and manage time
  • Commitment to professionalism and care for asylum seekers and refugees
  • Excellent people skills, with a positive attitude and friendly disposition
