PRESS STATEMENT | LHR goes to court for 14th time, as state fails to relocate farmworkers and their families

Date: 17/09/2021

LHR’s Land and Housing Programme is in court again for the fourteenth time this year for the case of Ventersdorp farmworkers and their families who were evicted and left on the side of the road. LHR had to bring another urgent application to compel the relevant state entities to relocate the farmworkers who have been staying in a municipal hall since April 2021.

On 13 July 2021, the state entities undertook that the farmworkers and their families would be relocated within two weeks. However, nothing of the sort happened. Advocate De Vos SC who argued on behalf of the farmworkers said, “I think about how these government officials are going back to their warm homes with electricity and sanitation while our clients continue to stay in inhumane conditions indefinitely.” The Judge gave an order that the farmworkers and their families must be relocated within three weeks and that the government must provide the Land Claims Court with weekly updates.
