[VACANCY] LHR seeks National Director

LHR is a vibrant, 40-year old non-profit organisation offering specialist public interest legal services in key programme areas such as refugee and migrant rights, land reform, housing, environmental justice, penal reform, gender equality, worker rights and public impact litigation. The organisation has a national footprint, with six offices and legal clinics located around the country.

LHR is seeking to appoint a National Director to lead the organisation. The position is based in Pretoria or Johannesburg. Salary and benefits are competitive with NGO standards. Candidates for the position should be effective managers and strategic thinkers. The core of the director’s work is managerial.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Providing strategic thinking and helping to ensure that LHR is well-positioned for the future;
  • Fundraising and donor engagement;
  • Managing the organization’s programmes and law clinics effectively;
  • Representing the organisation and advocating with government, multilateral organisations, international organisations, and other relevant international and regional institutions;
  • Developing appropriate staff performance mechanisms;
  • Ensuring sound and rigorous financial management and accountability based on ethical fiscal principles;
  • Identifying and building strategic partnerships and networks; and
  • Accounting to the Board of Trustees.

Requirements for the job include the following:

  • Must be an admitted legal practitioner in accordance with the Legal Practice Act, having practiced in South Africa for at least 5 years;
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising from both local and international funding/donor organizations;
  • Excellent understanding of the socio-political and human rights environment in South Africa and the region;
  • Postgraduate qualification in law or a related field, and a substantial record of legal advocacy, evidenced by involvement in litigation or campaigns in the broad field of human rights;
  • Minimum of five years’ senior organisational leadership and management experience in a human rights or related work environment;
  • Strong organisational, financial, and programme management skills;
  • Experience in developing networks, collaborations, and partnerships;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with good interpersonal skills; and
  • South African citizenship or permanent residency status.
